Redstone-Huntsville Chapter Meeting
September 27 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
Donald Jones, Short Line Development and Government Sales Manager for Norfolk Southern Corporation has agreed to speak to our chapter.
What got us interested in NS was that in July, various railroad shippers/shipper groups were testifying before Congress that rail service was getting worst nationally. Shippers have been blaming the industry’s adoption of Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR), an operating concept that stresses intense management of assets and changing customer behavior. The financial community loves it because the railroads’ return on investment (ROI) improves; customers hate it because the railroads become less flexible in their service. Going to Congress is seen as an attempt to increase regulation of the industry. However, NS developed a version of PSR and seemed to have rolled it out without causing problems for their shippers. We believe that NS can shall some good lessons-learned about how to develop new business models, communicate with stakeholders, etc. Also, Don will be working some rail deployments with the services in Oct-Nov 2019, so that may be something we would want him to talk about as well.
