Roundtable #1: Deployment to & Sustainment in Austere Locations – Advanced Preparation and Execution Dynamics

A discussion focused on the unique challenges of deploying to and sustaining forces in austere locations. The roundtable will discuss advance planning requirements as well as the associated execution dynamics for both large and small-scale operations in austere locations. 

Moderator: Dr. Dennis Walters, Director, Irregular Warfare Center (IWC)
Dr. Walters is the Director of the Irregular Warfare Center guiding the Defense Department and the Interagency approach to conflict and competition, focusing on irregular warfare. Dr. Walters enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in 1983, and later was assigned command of Special Forces Operations Detachment, SFODA 081, deploying to the Balkans. As a fluent Russian speaker, in 2001, he was sent to liaison with the Russian Army in Tajikistan to support the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan. After retiring from the Army in 2009 he began building global networks of irregular warfare professionals for the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations. Through Dr. Walters’ leadership, the Department of Defense Regional Defense Fellowship Program (RDFP) was established, a network that today consists of more than 20,000 people from 120 countries that supports U.S. national security and the country’s allies and partners around the globe. The RDFP program oversees the College of International Security Affairs (CISA) at the National Defense University and the Joint Special Operations Master of Arts Program located at Ft. Liberty.

Dr. Walters will be joined by other leaders at the roundtable who have unique leadership experience in the field of deploying and sustaining forces in austere locations, including:
