The National Defense Transportation Association (NDTA) and Christopher Newport University’s Center for American Studies (CAS) jointly hosted the NDTA-CAS Surface Force Projection Meeting (SFPM) at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va., May 18–21. The event attracted 286 registrants from across the defense, transportation, logistics, and maritime communities.

Centered on the theme, “Projecting Power in a Globally Contested Environment – Ideas into Action!” the meeting examined the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of force projection. Government and industry leaders explored critical topics including seaport readiness, port activations, deployment operations, freight booking systems, the Joint Transportation Management System (JTMS), and evolving threats to the nation’s transportation infrastructure.

Strategic Insights from Senior Leaders

A distinguished lineup of government, military, and industry speakers shared perspectives on strategic deployment policy, resilient logistics operations, surface mobility, maritime transportation, and public-private partnerships. Their presentations underscored the importance of innovation, collaboration, and adaptability in ensuring the Joint Force can deploy and sustain operations in increasingly contested environments. Attendees gained valuable insights into emerging technologies, operational best practices, and initiatives designed to strengthen national mobility and readiness.

Spotlight on Emerging Challenges and Solutions

Three moderated panel discussions tackled some of the most pressing issues facing the defense transportation enterprise. Sessions explored lessons learned from Turbo Fusion, strategies for enhancing infrastructure resilience, and technology enablers that will shape the future of mobility and deployment operations. The panels generated lively discussion and provided practical takeaways for both government and industry stakeholders.
